The revival of the state in 1918 is a crucial event - Ara Papian

The causes of the loss of statehood and the lessons to be learned

The revival of the state in 1918 is a crucial event for us. Head of the analytical center “Modus Vivendi”, political analyst Ara Papyan adds, no matter how you feel about this period, we must understand that today we owe it. Why did we lose the statehood? In response to his question, Papyan lists a number of reasons.

“The first and most significant reason was geopolitical. In 1920, Soviet Russia pursued a policy of exporting the world revolution. Armenia, which historically was a friendly country of the Russian Empire, that is, the Armenians, and more specifically the territory, turned out to be not an ally, but an obstacle to the world revolution since the revolution was to be implemented with the help of Turkey and the Turkish people,” the political analyst emphasizes. He also notes that it was in this context that on the basis of common interests, the Kemalists and Bolsheviks came together.

Ara Papian stresses that there were internal reasons as well, in particular, the ruling regime could not keep the people's inspiration for 2.5 years. “In 1920, the people were so tired of the authorities that on October 30, Kars Fortress fell without resistance. This should be a lesson for the authorities of all time”. Find the details in the program “Paradigm”.
