Will the new government succeed in the fight against corruption? Varuzhan Hoktanyan’s assessment

Corruption is a terrible monster, which often tries to turn someone, who wants to destroy it, into the same monster.

Corruption is a terrible monster, which often tries to turn someone, who wants to destroy it, into the same monster. Varuzhan Hoktanyan, project director of “Transparency International” Anti-Corruption Center, believes that this is the greatest threat. “If you do not seriously fight the causes of corruption, and the main cause of corruption is the economic, political and social model in the country, if this model does not change, then the figure fighting against this monster himself becomes a monster, as it happened in the early 90's,” says Varuzhan Hoktanyan.

The head of the anti-corruption center stresses that in order to fight against corruption, it is necessary to change the environment so that there is an opportunity to remain incorruptible. “If there is no middle class in the country, if 60% of the population lives in poverty, and the rest live in fear of falling into this poverty, if we have such a disgraceful phenomenon as ‘working poor’, then I do not believe that it is possible to effectively combat corruption in such conditions,” Hoktanyan notes.
